Attic Insulation for South Florida Homes
Attic Insulation in South Florida
Attic insulation keeps the heat that builds up under your roof from pouring into the rooms below. In South Florida, the best results usually come from sealing and insulating the attic, not just adding more material to the floor. ProFoam & Coatings inspects, removes old insulation and installs spray foam across Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade.
Why your attic matters more in South Florida
In most of the country, attic insulation is about keeping heat in during winter. Here it’s the opposite. For most of the year the sun bakes your roof, and the attic underneath can get far hotter than the air outside. That heat radiates down through the ceiling and into every room on the top floor.
Many South Florida homes also have their air handler and ductwork in the attic. When the attic is an oven, the cold air in those ducts warms up before it ever reaches a vent, and your AC has to run longer to make up for it. Humid outdoor air leaking in through the attic adds even more load.
Good attic insulation slows that heat, and an air-sealed attic stops the humid air. Together they’re one of the most effective upgrades you can make to a Florida home’s comfort.

Attic insulation options for Florida homes
There’s more than one way to insulate an attic. Here’s how the common options compare in this climate.
Spray foam under the roof deck
Foam is sprayed on the underside of the roof, sealing and insulating in one step. The attic becomes a sealed, conditioned space, and ductwork stays much cooler.
Blown-in insulation
Loose fiberglass or cellulose is blown across the attic floor. It’s an economical way to add R-value, but it doesn’t air-seal and leaves the ductwork in the hot attic above it.
Fiberglass batts
Pre-cut blankets laid between the ceiling joists. Common in older homes, but gaps, compression and moisture reduce how well they perform over time.
Radiant barrier
A reflective foil layer under the roof that reflects some of the sun’s heat. It can help, but it isn’t insulation on its own and works alongside it.
ProFoam & Coatings specializes in spray foam. During your inspection we’ll look at your attic and tell you which approach makes sense for your home and budget.

Spray foam vs. blown-in insulation
Blown-in insulation is the most common attic upgrade in older Florida homes, and it’s usually the cheapest way to add R-value to the attic floor. The trade-off is that it only slows heat moving through the ceiling. Hot, humid air can still move through gaps around lights, vents and the attic hatch, and the ducts above the insulation stay in the hottest part of the house.
Spray foam on the roof deck costs more up front, but it seals the attic and moves the insulation line up to the roof. The attic stays closer to the temperature of your living space, the ducts lose far less cooling, and less humid air gets into the home. For many South Florida homes, that’s the bigger improvement in comfort and cooling costs. See our full spray foam insulation page for how it works and the difference between open- and closed-cell foam.
Old attic insulation removal
If your attic has old insulation that’s flattened, damp, moldy or contaminated by rodents or insects, adding more on top doesn’t fix the problem. Removing it first gives you a clean attic, gets rid of odors and allergens, and lets us see the roof deck and framing before we insulate.
When the job calls for it, we remove the old insulation, clean up the attic and then install the new insulation, so you’re dealing with one crew from start to finish. If you’re already planning a spray foam upgrade, removal is often done in the same project.

Signs your attic insulation isn’t doing its job
✓
Upstairs or back rooms that stay hot no matter where you set the thermostat.
✓
FPL bills that keep climbing in the summer even though your AC is working.
✓
An AC that barely shuts off on hot afternoons.
✓
Insulation that’s thin, flattened or uneven when you look in the attic.
✓
Droppings, nesting or a musty smell coming from the attic.
✓
A sticky, humid feel in the house even with the air running.
If you’re seeing two or more of these, a free attic inspection will show what’s going on and what it would take to fix it.

What better attic insulation does for your home
Cooler top-floor rooms
Less heat coming through the ceiling means fewer hot spots and more even temperatures.
Less humidity
Sealing the attic keeps humid outdoor air out and helps your AC control moisture.
Lower cooling costs
When your system runs less, your FPL bill can come down. Savings vary by home, roof and AC.
Cooler ductwork
Ducts in a sealed attic deliver colder air to the rooms that need it.
A cleaner attic
Removing old, contaminated insulation gets rid of dust, droppings and odors.
FPL rebates and attic insulation
FPL has offered rebates to customers who upgrade ceiling insulation in qualifying homes. Program rules, eligibility and amounts change, so check FPL’s current requirements before you plan around a rebate. Our FPL insulation rebate guide explains how the program works, and we can talk through it during your estimate.

Frequently asked questions
How much does attic insulation cost in South Florida?
It depends on the size of the attic, the type of insulation, how thick it’s installed and whether old insulation has to be removed first. We give a free written estimate after inspecting the attic. Our insulation cost guide explains what drives the price.
Is spray foam or blown-in insulation better for a Florida attic?
Blown-in is cheaper and adds R-value to the attic floor. Spray foam on the roof deck costs more but also air-seals the attic and keeps ductwork cooler, which usually makes the bigger difference in Florida’s heat and humidity. We’ll recommend what fits your home.
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Not always. If the old insulation is dry, clean and in decent shape, it can sometimes stay. If it’s damp, moldy, flattened or contaminated by pests, removing it first is the better choice. We’ll tell you which applies after the inspection.
Can spray foam insulation be removed later?
Yes, spray foam can be removed, but it’s labor-intensive because it bonds to the roof deck and framing. That’s why it matters to inspect the roof deck and fix leaks before foam is installed.
Is a radiant barrier worth it in Florida?
A radiant barrier reflects some of the sun’s heat and can help in a hot, vented attic, but it doesn’t air-seal and isn’t a substitute for insulation. If you’re sealing the attic with spray foam on the roof deck, a radiant barrier usually adds little.
Will new attic insulation lower my FPL bill?
In many homes, yes. Less heat and humid air coming through the attic means your AC runs less. How much you save depends on your home, roof, AC system and how much insulation you had before.
