Spray Foam Attic Insulation for Florida Homes
Spray foam attic insulation is applied to the underside of your roof deck, sealing and insulating the attic in one step. Instead of a hot, humid attic over your ceiling, you get a sealed space close to the temperature of your home. ProFoam & Coatings installs it for homeowners across Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade.
How spray foam changes a Florida attic
In a traditional vented attic, insulation sits on the attic floor and the space above it is open to outside air. In South Florida that means the attic fills with hot, humid air for most of the year, right where many homes keep their air handler and ductwork.
Spray foam attic insulation moves the insulation up to the roof deck. Once the underside of the roof and the gable walls are sealed, the attic is no longer connected to the outside. It stays much closer to the temperature inside your home, and the ductwork running through it stops losing cooling to a superheated space.
Homeowners usually notice it first in the rooms under the roof: they cool down faster, stay cooler in the afternoon and feel less sticky.

Open-cell or closed-cell for your attic?
Most residential roof decks in South Florida are sprayed with open-cell foam. It’s lighter, expands to fill irregular spaces and seals air leaks well, and it’s usually the more economical choice for a full attic.
Closed-cell foam is denser, has a higher R-value per inch and resists moisture. It’s used where space is tight, where moisture is a concern, or on specific parts of the home where extra rigidity helps.
We’ll recommend the type and thickness that fits your roof, attic and budget after we inspect it. Our spray foam insulation page covers the differences in more detail.
Where we use spray foam in homes
Attic roof decks
The most common residential project: a sealed, conditioned attic.
Gable walls and knee walls
Sealing the walls between the attic and living space, and between attic and outdoors.
Additions and renovations
Open walls and ceilings in new rooms, garages being converted and remodels.
Bonus rooms and garages
Rooms over garages and other spaces that are always hotter than the rest of the house.
Sound control
Open-cell foam in interior walls and ceilings can help reduce noise between rooms.
Before we spray: roof, ventilation and AC
A sealed attic only works if it’s done right. Before we spray, we check the roof deck for leaks or damage, because foam shouldn’t go over a roof that’s failing. We look at how the attic is vented today and plan how vents will be sealed, and we make sure the plan works with your AC system and ductwork.
Florida’s building code allows unvented attic assemblies when they’re built to its requirements, which is why it matters who designs and installs the system. If your roof needs work first, we’ll tell you. If old insulation on the attic floor is damp, dirty or damaged by pests, we can remove it as part of the job. See attic insulation for removal and other options.

Is spray foam right for your home?
✓
Your upstairs or back rooms stay hot even with the AC running.
✓
Your air handler and ducts are in the attic, which is common in South Florida homes.
✓
Your house feels humid or sticky indoors.
✓
Your FPL bills climb every summer and the AC rarely shuts off.
✓
Your attic insulation is old, thin or damaged and needs replacing anyway.
✓
You’re planning a new roof and want to insulate the deck at the same time.
If several of these sound familiar, a free attic inspection is the best next step.
How long spray foam lasts in your attic
Spray foam is installed to stay in place for the life of the home. Once it cures, it doesn’t settle, sag or compress the way loose-fill and batt insulation can, so the attic keeps the same level of insulation and air sealing year after year.
A sealed attic does need a little attention. Keep an eye out for roof leaks, since water can travel under foam before it shows on a ceiling, and keep up with regular AC maintenance so the system keeps controlling humidity in the whole house, including the attic. If you ever have roof work done, let your roofer know the deck is insulated with spray foam.

Frequently asked questions
How much does spray foam attic insulation cost?
It depends on the size of the roof deck, open- or closed-cell foam, thickness and whether old insulation is removed first. We give a free written estimate after inspecting the attic. See our spray foam cost guide.
Will spray foam make my attic too humid?
A sealed attic needs to be designed with your AC system in mind. Done correctly, it’s part of the conditioned space and humidity is controlled along with the rest of the house. We look at ventilation, ductwork and moisture during the inspection.
Do I need to leave the house while you spray?
Yes. Plan to be out of the home during spraying and for a period afterward set by the foam manufacturer. We’ll give you the exact timing for your project.
Can you spray foam if I’m getting a new roof soon?
It’s usually best to replace a failing roof first, then insulate the new deck. If a new roof is planned, we can coordinate the timing with your roofer.
Does spray foam help with noise?
Open-cell foam absorbs sound, so it can reduce outside noise through the roof and noise between rooms when it’s used in interior walls and ceilings.
